Episode 112: Growing Pains: Embracing Discomfort as a Path to Transformation

In this episode, I talk about embracing the discomfort that comes with personal and professional growth. This past year has been incredibly challenging for me—between struggles in my personal life, family, and business, I’ve had to confront some serious hardships. I open up about these experiences, the tough decisions I’ve made, and how I’m finding ways to move forward in this new season of life. I hope that by sharing my journey, I can encourage you to see discomfort as a crucial part of your own growth.

Confronting Burnout and Stepping Back
A little over a year ago, I went through a very difficult time with my mental health, even ending up in the hospital. Though I left that experience wanting to push forward, I quickly realized I hadn’t given myself enough time to fully heal. By spring, I was totally burnt out and knew I needed a change. That’s when I made the decision to step away from running my business, Quiet Lines Design, full-time and to shift into a new role as an online art teacher. This transition hasn’t been easy, but it’s given me a chance to find balance and regain my strength.

Restructuring My Business for a New Season
Walking away from my business almost felt like giving up on a dream, and at one point, I even thought about shutting it down completely. Thankfully, some wise voices in my life encouraged me to keep it going, even if it looked different. Over the past few months, I’ve been exploring ways to make Quiet Lines Design more sustainable by adopting a hands-off approach, including print-on-demand and fulfillment centers for a more passive role in my business with less overhead. This new structure is full of growing pains, but I know it’s what I need to keep my creative work alive while taking care of myself.

Embracing Discomfort as Part of Growth
In both my personal and professional life, I’m learning that discomfort often comes right before big breakthroughs. From managing mental health challenges to beginning therapy, I’m working through my own growing pains and finding that growth can’t happen without some “breaking open.” Just like a seed that has to crack for a plant to sprout, this discomfort is bringing me closer to the person I’m meant to become. I encourage you to look at any areas of unease in your life as signs of growth, whether it’s a big transition or something smaller.

The discomfort of growth isn’t easy, but I’m learning that with self-compassion, a positive mindset, and a strong support system, we can face these challenges head-on. I hope this episode reminds you that feeling uncomfortable is a natural part of becoming the best version of yourself. I’m right here in the thick of it, cheering you on—let’s embrace this journey of growth together!

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Growth often comes with discomfort. It is a natural part of the process and it signals that you’re stretching into something new. Embrace it as an indicator of progress rather than a setback.

  • Just as a seed must break to grow, or childbirth brings pain before new life, growth often requires a form of breaking or shedding.

  • Remind yourself that this discomfort aligns with a larger purpose. Keeping your eyes on your bigger goals can make today’s struggles feel more meaningful and worth it.

  • Growth isn’t easy, so treat yourself with kindness. Avoid judging yourself and embrace self-compassion. This gentle approach allows growth to happen more naturally and with less resistance.

  • Growth can feel isolating, but it doesn’t have to be. Reach out to friends, mentors, or communities who understand your journey. Leaning on people who have faced similar challenges can bring comfort, encouragement, and practical advice.

  • Even if you can’t see it now, believe that there’s beauty and wisdom waiting on the other side of your current challenges. Trust that the breaking, the discomfort, and the struggle are shaping you into a version of yourself that’s more aligned with your dreams and potential.
